Burqu area extends North to Ruwaished, the last agglomeration on the so called 'Bagdad Road' before reaching the Iraki border. It is now a natural reserve managed by the RSCN. After crossing the last lava flows that typically blacken the Jordanian Eastern Desert, you will engage in a wide and flat desert where you can see mirages all around. This area contents several lakes that the local communities have landscaped for conserving water around the year. Those oasis represent important biotopes for the biodiversity. On the bank of one a them, Burqu Lake, stand the vestiges of an Umayyad complexe built on the remains of a Roman fort that was turned in a monastery during the Byzantine period. In the surroundings of this site we can also see many remains dated back to the Neolithic period.
