Orabi's Farm

Permaculture is not only a set of agricultural practices that ensures sustainability and self-sufficiency, it is also a lifestyle, a connection to the earth as well as a philosophy. In Jordan, the introduction of the industrial agriculture is relatively recent. As yet we can find areas where a traditional or semi-traditional agriculture is still in use, or where the older generations keep their ancestral practices on their private lands, against all odds. Those pockets preserving the traditional practices are valuable, meaning that they represent testimonies and sometimes precious models for us and for the coming generations who will have to face the disastrous disbalances generated by erroneous food production.

Orabi's farm is one of those pockets. A haven of peace nested in middle of the crop fields near Ghor Haditha village at the South edge of the Dead Sea. While summer throws a scorching heat over the plain, winter is of the mildest leniency. A perfect place to escape from Amman and reconnect with the nature and a simple and authentic rustic structure.

The traditional houses of this area, as also in the North Jordan Valley, are made of mud brick and cob. Cement sometimes strengthens the walls. The roofing consists of wood and reeds stems covered with cob.  This type of houses insures a good isolation against the heat. However, they require regular maintenance, what explains their gradual abandonment. It is therefore a rare experience to be accommodate in such a house.

This homestay can be your base to visit the whole area, starting with the cultivated lands of the plain, as well the lands affected by the phenomenon of the sink holes, the Dead Sea marls and their little monastery site. For that, it would be a great idea to rent bikes and the Numeira Environmental Association. You can also enjoy hiking in the different wadies of the area, accompanied by your host who perfectly knows his native area. With your car, you can extend your trip till Ghor Safi to see the ancient sugar factory and the Museum of the Lowest Point on Earth. Indeed, your stay will be full of surprises!
