Mukawir region owes its attractivity to the famous archaeological site preserving the foundations of Herod's palace, but also to its outstanding position dominating the Dead Sea, its proximity with the impressive Wadi Main and its lovely bucolic sceneries... a perfect place for those who seek retreat, calm and inspiration.
A local family opens their cosy home to share with you their culture and their environment. You feel at home in this countryside house, from where you can explore the whole area.
Especially, you can learn all the steps of the wool processing and Bedouin weaving, as this area is famous for the traditional Bedouin carpets manufacturing. This activity, reserved to women, was essential in the traditionally Bedouin lifestyle and represent an important identity of the Jordanian handicraft. It is nowadays hardly threatened. The revival projects face challenges since the outlets are limited and often occasional, particularly when tourism is low. Learning this craft represents not only an experience for yourself, but also a support to the transmission of a knowledge that is disappearing and a signal of positive encouragement to the local community to perpetuate this know-how.
You will be trained by the lady of the house, who combines the expertise of her long professional experience with real artistic skills. You will enjoy working with her and make your one colourful piece. You can also learn wool basketry and manufacture traditional round trays.
Do not hesitate to foresee enough time for this experience, in order to enjoy some strolls in the countryside and along the edges of the Dead Sea depression. This area is unique and offers good hiking opportunities.
