Azraq was in the past a huge oasis surviving all the year around thanks to perennal sources constantly surging out of the aquifere. Nowadays, the ground water are overpumped and the lake fills up only though the collection of the winter rain waters of numerous desert wadies. The ground brims with salt, so that some areas seem to be covered with snow. Some of those photos are precious as the Royal Society for Conservation of Nature has recently closed, prohibiting all access to the lake. Before the closing of the area, the locals were still extracting the salt in a traditional way.
